Ordinary people doing extra-ordinary things... and in the doing of such things, inspiring more people to follow their own inner voices that tell them to move and do and try. These are the human icons that define generations. This here collection of people is but a small example of some of this world’s past and present icons. These portraits are also an example of the commodification of icons, that spans generations. Of a tendency to smack a red bow on a human, along with a catchy soundbite in order to sell, a t-shirt, an idea, a painting... or an image of ourselves as being a touch more enlightened than our neighbours.
But... whatever works, right? keeping these amazing humans and their deeds fresh in our collective consciousness is immensely important.
Their stories and deeds serve as beacons of hope for generations of people who have none.

“I started thinking about that, and I used to think that the Talib would come, and he would just kill me. But then I said, ‘If he comes, what would you do Malala?’ then I would reply to myself, ‘Malala, just take a shoe and hit him.’
But then I said, ‘If you hit a Talib with your shoe, then there would be no difference between you and the Talib. You must not treat others with cruelty and that much harshly, you must fight others but through peace and through dialogue and through education.’
Then I said I will tell him how important education is and that ‘I even want education for your children as well.’ And I will tell him, ‘That’s what I want to tell you, now do what you want.” -Malala Yousafzai
"As a citizen of the earth… I fully have the right… to harvest water from the sky to grow my own food in my own home to harvest energy from the sun and the wind to contain and reuse my own waste on my own land to make my shelter comfortable without the use of fossil fuels and to harvest what others throw away to construct my own home I am willing to die to defend these rights and to spread the knowledge of how to achieve them to others. If six billion other people said this as well… we would transcend the corporations, the governments, and the federal reserve bank. We, the people, would always survive." -Michael Reynolds
“I don't give a shit what the world thinks. I was born a bitch, I was born a painter, I was born fucked. But I was happy in my way. You did not understand what I am. I am love. I am pleasure, I am essence, I am an idiot, I am an alcoholic, I am tenacious. I am; simply I am.” -Frida Kahlo
"Pessimism is what preserves the status quo and optimism is what brings us forward.” - Boyan Slat
“You must never be fearful about what you are doing when it is right.” - Rosa Parks
“And if we dare to look into those eyes, then we shall feel their suffering in our hearts. More and more people have seen that appeal and felt it in their hearts. All around the world there is an awakening of understanding and compassion, and understanding that reaches out to help the suffering animals in their vanishing homelands.
That embraces hungry, sick, and desperate human beings, people who are starving while the fortunate among us have so much more than we need. And if, one by one, we help them, the hurting animals, the desperate humans, then together we shall alleviate so much of the hunger, fear, and pain in the world.
Together we can bring change to the world, gradually replacing fear and hatred with compassion and love. Love for all living beings.” - Jane Goodall
